Carburetor 2 Hrs
The carb is the correct Holley S (two screw) that Ford used in 1913. It is a fairly simple carburetor with no separate slow speed circuit. Ford also used a Kingston 4-ball carb in 1913. The Holley S is difficult to tune. The mixture needs to be rich at idle and leaner at speed. There is no built in circuit that accommodates this. At start up and idle the main mixture knob on the dash may need to be opened to maintain a smooth idle. At speed the mixture may need to be leaned to keep the car from blowing black smoke and fouling the plugs. The Kingston 4-ball carb, also available in 1913, is better at regulating the mixture but it has its own shortcomings.
Cleaning the oil and dirt from the exterior of the carb will expose the 113 year old patina.
The mixture needle and float needle need to be dressed. The float is beyond help. The float hinge is home built. The strangling tube (Venturi) is brass and is in good shape. The throttle shaft is worn and will affect engine idle and starting. The throttle plate needs to be replaced. This is a rare carburetor and replacement parts are not available.
Recommendation: Restore and clean but don't polish the Holley S carb. If the mixture issue becomes problematic we can swap in a Holley NH carb from the 20’s.
